For Sale: "Milagro" 1974 Tartan 34-C
Hull #: 317
Location: Lancaster, Virginia
Posted: 18-03-2024
Price: Open to offers from $0-$12K (see below)
We’re looking for a new owner for ‘Milagro’, a 1974 Tartan 34-C. She has been in dry storage for several years, and given our health issues and age, we’ve accepted the reality that we will not be sailing her again. Before putting her in storage, we repaired some deck delamination, rebedded all the hardware and painted both the deck and hull. The exterior teak was in good shape, but has not been maintained for several years and needs to be sanded and recoated.
There are less than 50 engine hours on the refurbished Atomic 4, which was winterized and the gas tank drained before storing. There were some minor interior leaks, which led to the hardware rebedding, but no damage to the cabin sole or other furnishings. The headliner was removed and does need to be replaced.
Milagro has her original tiller steering and the centerboard works well. There are lots of engine parts, sails and other equipment included.
While it will take some work to get Milagro back into sailing condition, I don’t consider her a ‘project boat’. Since I’m not in a position right now to get her ready for a sea trial. I’m willing to sell her for very little, or even donate her to the right person. My main goal is to insure that she goes to someone who appreciates Tartan 34s and will value her accordingly.
I’m heading back East in April to check on her and make sure she is ready for a new owner. If you’re interested or know someone who is, please let me know. I can provide some older pictures (or new ones after April) as well as details about maintenance history and inventory.

Legend is set up as a club racer. She is a fast boat with a favorable PHRF rating of 195 which gives her a strong handicap in the local racing scene. She could be converted to an excellent cruising boat with minimal work and investment. Some Tartan 34Cs have crossed the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, circumnavigated the world and visited lands as far away as New Zealand. Like other Sparkman and Stephens designed yachts, they have won many races worldwide. Click here for a complete description.

This Tartan 34C, the AGAMEMNON, is in good condition. I bought the boat in 2011 from the
original owner, who bought it new. Under my ownership, it was re-powered in 2012 with a
30hp Yanmar diesel engine. It was fitted with a new drive train and a new exhaust system to
the stern. The bottom was blasted clean and repainted with an epoxy undercoat. The mast
was stripped and repainted.
I have sailed this boat with my family in the coastal waters between New York City and Boston.
It has a few upgrades from the original. It has a Datamarine wind and water instrumentation
install that I have never used. I have made some deck replacement repairs around both
chainplate areas. There is a deck repair spot to starboard of the forward cabin that needs
repair. All other systems have aged appropriately under the care of attentive and safetyconscious
sailors.

I bought this boat in 2022 but have since become founder and president of a new coastal resiliency non-profit and I haven't been able to set aside the time or resources needed to get this beauty back to cruising condition.
The Tartan 34C was designed by Sparkman and Stephens as a blue water racing and cruising boat. Back in the day, it won the Newport-Bermuda race along with many others. People have sailed these around the world. Not many boats of this size are more seaworthy than the 34C.
This particular vessel is one of the rare 34Cs with a wooden bow sprit. It comes with a main, jib, storm tri-sail and a genoa. All sails are in working condition. The Force 10 propane oven and stove works and is great to cook in. The boat galley has been remodeled with a deep sink and blue tile work. There is a diesel heater installed that keeps the boat warm 3 seasons and most of the winter.
Matching 1960's dire dink sailing dinghy can be included as well...
This boat does need work, but it will last forever and retain its value either way. Tartan 34Cs in full working order go for upwards of $50k.
Also included:
- Garmin GPS, fully functional
- Extra sail material
- boat hook
- lots of extra line
- lots of spare engine parts and other parts
- warranty for new bilge pump
Some work needed:
- Original Atomic 4 gasoline engine needs overhaul, but I have spare parts and a mechanic estimated $600 to get it working again. These engines last forever but do require some maintenance which can be done by an adequate novice mechanic. The engine worked to get me down from Stony Point, NY to Rockaway and it just needs some love.
- Small hole in main cabin sole from water tank leak. I have removed the old water tank which was cracked, and i have purchased a new Plano soft tank but have not installed yet.
- Head remodel in progress. I have removed the old fixtures from the head and intended to put a composting toilet in there, but so far I have just demo'd the head and I haven't installed the toilet.
- Electrical work. I have begun rewiring the boat, and all essential systems are working but some of the lighting still needs to be rewired. I have already purchased new electrical panels and bus bar that have been installed.
